We designed a new house for a couple returning to their home town with the desire to raise their children close to old friends and family. Our shared vision was to create the home as a central gathering place for the extended family, with plenty of play space for kids and indoor/outdoor entertaining. The design emphasizes natural light, an open floor plan, and contemporary styling.
The basic design is a spacious central living and entertaining space sort of like a large glass cube, flanked on either side by “house-shaped” wings with cedar shingle siding. These contain the home’s kitchen, dining area, and bedrooms. These separate but connected parts visually break up the appearance of a large house such as this, making it look like a collection of buildings rather than one imposing mass. You can read more about the design concept here.
We were able to orient the house just so on the large building lot to make the best use of sunlight. The south-facing windows take advantage of the low winter sun, but are protected from the summer sun by louvers and overhangs. Generous window wells allow daylight into the basement-level family room.
The rear of the house enjoys views of a large swimming pool and a paved sport court, surely locking in this home as a central gathering place for old and new friends and family.
