The aging-in-place addition we designed for a suburban Philadelphia home has won a national award from the 2022 Chrysalis Awards for Remodeling Excellence.
The Chrysalis Awards program, begun in 1994, recognizes the nation’s best work in fourteen general categories of residential and commercial remodeling. Entries are judged on overall design, the creative use of space and materials, and the degree to which the project enhanced the original structure.
Our winning project is a 650-square-foot addition designed for the homeowner’s father to live independently but close to family. It’s essentially a complete single-story apartment, with a bedroom/sitting room, a kitchenette with an office nook and laundry, and an accessible bathroom. There is a separate entrance off the patio, as well as an entry into the main house. The family dubbed the addition “The Dad Pad.”
This project had a clear objective from the initial concept – to provide social connections and physical support to an elderly parent without sacrificing the parent’s independence and comfort or putting undue strain on the family. Dad has a safe and comfortable first-floor suite with room for everything he needs. He can have time to himself or can easily join in family meals and activities. The family retains their privacy as well but can enjoy Dad’s company and always know how he’s doing. We’re honored to have earned recognition from the Chrysalis Awards for this special project. “Krieger Architects has won six Chrysalis Awards in the past eight years, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to professionalism and excellence,” says Ken Kanline, director of the program. Here is one of our previous award-winners– a condo renovation offering another approach to designing for different stages of life.
