The existing family room/dining room addition on an old stone house in Chestnut Hill was virtually obliterated when a very large tree fell on it during a tropical storm. Fortunately, no one was home at the time. The family was eager to rebuild ASAP, since this was a prime gathering spot between the kitchen and patio, especially favored for holiday get-togethers.
We kept the same footprint and general feeling of the original addition, but relocated the fireplace to the center of the end wall where there had been one large window. We flanked the new fireplace with two new window bays. They provide the same amount of window seating as before, and still let in plenty of daylight. One design feature we retained was the large skylight where the addition meets the existing house. A slate roof, stone veneer, and copper downspouts reflect the appearance of the existing house.
