This renovation transformed a large unadorned basement area devoted mostly to children’s play into a connected series of more sophisticated spaces for entertaining adults and pre-teens. It’s like a series of new family rooms in one room.
For the grownups, we created a comfortable lounging area with large screen TV, fireplace, and showcase wine storage area with room for 300 bottles. There are game tables in open areas for all to enjoy, each with plenty of elbow room. A new wet bar has a central position. Its cabinetry offers ample storage for snacks and drinks. A cozy corner holds a table for board games next to the double-sided fireplace. These areas all feel distinct, but not separate from the whole. At the rear, there is a somewhat separate lounging/TV room. It provides access to the back yard and pool as well as the new bathroom with large marble shower. Overall, the finished area of the basement was expanded by 50%.
The family is delighted to have a bright, comfortable and functional new family room for everyone to be together whether they’re pursuing different activities or watching TV together. The adults can entertain friends while the kids play Foosball—or vice versa!
The project earned a 2018 Chrysalis Award, an annual award for a variety of outstanding remodeling projects across the USA. For more details on how we and Orion General Contractors worked together to accomplish the projects’ goals, see this article in Qualified Remodeler magazine.
