Constructed in the early 1900’s, this traditional home had an undersized kitchen for contemporary standards. We replaced the old mudroom/laundry addition with a cottage-like addition, where a bright new spacious kitchen, mudroom, and laundry serve the needs of a modern family of five. We gave the addition cedar shingles, a nod to the family’s beloved vacation cottage in Maine. The kitchen has views of the garden and opens onto a new patio for outdoor dining.
The tray ceiling and clerestory windows provide additional light and ventilation for the new kitchen. Banquette seating fits into the sunny window bay for cozy but ample seating at the breakfast area. A custom made stainless steel pot rack hangs from the exposed posts and beams which support the clerestory and break up the height of the space.
