This stylish Center City remodel project is a truly exceptional and rare property, a distinctive gem that sets itself apart from any we have encountered before. Originally built in the 1860s as a carriage house near Rittenhouse Square, this residence saw a significant expansion in the early 20th century with the addition of a spacious brick carriage barn at the rear. The structure later underwent a transformation into two single-story condominiums, which we seamlessly combined into an extraordinary home.
Given its status on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places, preserving the historic integrity was paramount. While meticulously maintaining and restoring the exterior, we demolished the interior of the two separate units to craft a modern living space that elegantly links both floors. A thoughtful design choice brought the original kitchen wall inward, creating a delightful outdoor dining and patio space that enhances the property’s overall allure. The existing street-level garage has been retained, leading to a welcoming foyer, a new staircase, a convenient powder room, and a contemporary kitchen and breakfast room that honor the original carriage house’s charm. The kitchen flows into the expansive barn area, now transformed into a sophisticated living room featuring a grand piano and a beautifully appointed bar that accommodates ten to twelve guests. The barn showcases restored heavy tempered trusses, complemented by a new skylight that allows natural light to flood the space.
On the second floor, three bedrooms were added alongside a new primary suite complete with a luxurious master bathroom and a spacious master closet. Additional first-floor spaces include a dedicated exercise room and a study, designed for both relaxation and productivity. This unique residence embodies architectural sophistication and luxurious living, making it a true standout and daring stylish Center City remodel.
